02 — WHAT WE MEASURED
Why every Instagram transcript comes from speech recognition
We ask Instagram for the post's public embed, the one view it serves without a login. It carries the video address and the post's caption, but no caption track. So we download the video, keep the audio, and send it to speech recognition on Workers AI.
Measured on 18 September 2026: the embed for one 57.7-second reel carried no caption track, only the video address. That video file was 7,702,742 bytes.
The post's caption is the creator's own text, not speech. We show it as the title above the transcript and never mix it into the transcript.
What a 10-link test returned
On 18 September 2026, 5 of 10 links came back with text, all through speech recognition, because none of the 10 posts had a caption track.
The other 5 were posts Instagram would not show to a signed-out visitor. Removed, private and restricted posts all look like that from outside. That is a 10-link sample, not a success rate.
When there is no text
- The post would not load: private, removed, restricted, or not a post link.
- The post is a photo or a carousel with no video, so there is no speech in it.
- The video could not be downloaded at that moment. Worth trying again.
- The audio had no recognizable speech: a music-only or silent reel.
- The recognition call failed, or the video is longer than 20 minutes.
TXT, SRT or VTT
TXT is the readable script with no clock. SRT is the subtitle file an editor expects, with numbered cues and times like 00:00:01,280. VTT holds the same cues in WebVTT form for web players, with times like 00:00:01.280.

How do I get the transcript of an Instagram reel?
Copy the reel's share link, paste it at the top of this page, select Get the text, then copy the text or download a file.
Do I need an Instagram account?
No. The post has to be public.
Can I paste a post link instead of a reel link?
Yes. /reel/, /reels/, /p/ and /tv/ links all work, and so does the shortcode on its own.
Why is the post caption at the top?
It is the creator's caption, shown as the title. The transcript under it is what was said.
Does this page keep my links?
There are no accounts or saved personal link histories. Instagram transcripts may be cached for up to 24 hours and reused for requests for the same reel.
