Where the words come from
There are two sources, and the page takes the cheaper one first. If TikTok already stores a caption track on the video — a creator-uploaded track or TikTok’s own automatic captions — the page reads that file and the text is almost immediate. If there is no caption track, the page downloads the video, keeps only the audio track, and sends that audio through speech recognition.
The speech step runs on Workers AI, the same provider that hosts this site, and the timings you see come from the model’s own word list rather than from invented cue numbers. Measured on 2026-09-18: a 32-second video arrived as an 8,507,135-byte MP4; the audio-only file built from it was 132,707 bytes, and the recognition call returned the speech that the video’s own caption track also contains, word for word. Long audio is sent in pieces of about 45 seconds, so a long clip still comes back complete.
In a 20-link run on 2026-09-18, 11 links came back with text: 4 from a caption track that already existed, 7 from speech recognition on the audio. Nine did not come back with text: seven were videos TikTok would not serve at all (three of those links were fake IDs I made up on purpose, to check this path), one had an audio file that could not be downloaded, and one hit a failed recognition call. That is a 20-link sample, not a rate, and your links will differ.
One honest limit of speech recognition: music. When a clip is mostly music, the model may return a repeating line or a stock phrase instead of meaningful words. I saw that on a music-heavy clip during the same run. A clip that is mostly talking is the case this works well for.
When there is no text to show
Some failures are still real, and the status line names which one you hit instead of showing a platform error page:
- The video would not load at all — private, removed, or a link that is not a video.
- No caption track, and the video file could not be downloaded at that moment — worth trying again.
- No caption track, and the audio came back without recognisable speech — a music-only clip, or a silent one.
- No caption track, and the recognition call failed — worth trying again.
- No caption track, and the audio is longer than this page transcribes in a single pass.
Short share links (vt.tiktok.com and vm.tiktok.com) are followed to the video automatically, so you can paste the link the app gave you.
Photo posts and profile URLs are not videos, and this page will say it could not load one rather than produce filler text.
